American Express has introduced the Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Kit and announced a new protection framework for AI-driven transactions.
The developer kit is designed to support intent-driven transactions conducted by AI agents while maintaining visibility and control across the entire commerce lifecycle.
The ACE Developer Kit provides a framework that integrates American Express Cards and Membership benefits into AI-powered interactions, ensuring transactions are secure and aligned with customer intent.

“AI agents are beginning to reshape how people discover products and services, plan travel and dining, and make purchases. As these capabilities evolve, Card Members and merchants will expect the same level of trust and security they rely on from American Express. The ACE Developer Kit brings this into AI-powered commerce,” said Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Innovation, American Express.

- Agent Registration to verify AI agents before transactions
- Account Enablement to allow Card Members to register cards for agent-led purchases
- Intent Intelligence to capture and validate purchase intent
- Payment Credentials using tokenised credentials for secure transactions
- Cart Context to share transaction details for validation and dispute resolution

American Express also introduced Amex Agent Purchase Protection, extending coverage to transactions completed by registered AI agents.
The protection applies when a Card Member authorises an AI agent to make a purchase and ensures coverage in cases of agent-related errors.
“As commerce becomes more agent-powered, trust becomes the defining factor. Our goal is to ensure that when an agent acts on a Card Member’s behalf, both identity and intent are clearly verified, so every transaction reflects the same level of trust and reliability,” said Gebb.
Powered by Amex’s Closed-Loop Network
American Express’ closed-loop network, where it acts as issuer, network, and acquirer, provides end-to-end visibility across transactions. This allows the company to manage authentication, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, and security within a single system. For merchants, this improves visibility and reduces disputes, while for customers, it offers more control and transparency across AI-driven transactions.

American Express is already working with AI platforms to support agent-driven transactions and is collaborating with industry partners to define standards for this emerging space.
