East Yorkshire Buses Rolls Out Contactless ‘Tap On, Tap Off’ Payments

East Yorkshire Buses has introduced a contactless ‘Tap-on, Tap-off’ payment system, helping passengers board faster while automatically receiving the lowest daily fare.

East Yorkshire Buses, a public transport operator in the UK, has launched a network-wide ‘Tap-on, Tap-off’ contactless payment system across its fleet. The new technology enables passengers to pay for journeys using a contactless bank card, smartphone or smartwatch, simplifying ticketing while improving the overall travel experience.

Instead of purchasing a ticket before boarding, passengers simply tap their payment device as they enter and exit the bus. The system automatically calculates the lowest applicable fare based on all journeys made during the day, removing the need to choose tickets in advance and ensuring customers always receive the best available price.

The rollout was supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council through funding from the Department for Transport’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), forming part of wider efforts to modernise local bus services, reduce boarding times and encourage greater use of public transport.

“We’re delighted to have supported a scheme that will make travelling by bus easier and more convenient for passengers. Similar systems have already proved their value in other parts of the country, and it’s great to see the same benefits now available across East Yorkshire,” said Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Planning, East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

According to East Yorkshire Buses, the new system removes uncertainty around ticket selection by automatically determining the most cost-effective fare, whether passengers make a single journey or multiple trips during the day. The operator said the technology is intended to make bus travel simpler and more accessible for customers.

“Customers can simply travel knowing they’ll always receive the best available fare for the journeys they make. We’re grateful to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for supporting this investment, which reflects a shared commitment to delivering smarter, more accessible public transport across the region,” said Stuart Fillingham, Commercial Director, East Yorkshire Buses.
